The opportunity and Challenge of Digital System Toward the Socio-Economic Development in Lao PDR

Ministry of Planning and Investment, Ministry of Post and Telecommunications and World Bank co-organized a workshop on “The Digital Opportunities to Increase Competitiveness in the Future” on 28 November 2019 at the Don Chan Palace, Vientiane. The workshop was co-chaired by Ph.D. Mr. Kikeo Chanhthabouri, Vice Minister of Ministry of Planning, Mr. Thongxay Sanxayya, Vice Minister of Ministry of Post and Telecommunications and Mrs. Viengsamay Srithirath, Acting Country Director, the World Bank of Lao PDR, with the participants of relevant sectors from government sector, private sectors, and international experts over 100 people actively attended to the said workshop.

Ministry of Planning and Investment, Ministry of Post and Telecommunications and World Bank co-organized a workshop on “The Digital Opportunities to Increase Competitiveness in the Future” on 28 November 2019 at the Don Chan Palace, Vientiane.

The workshop was co-chaired by Ph.D. Mr. Kikeo Chanhthabouri, Vice Minister of Ministry of Planning, Mr. Thongxay Sanxayya, Vice Minister of Ministry of Post and Telecommunications and Mrs. Viengsamay Srithirath, Acting Country Director, the World Bank of Lao PDR, with the participants of relevant sectors from government sector, private sectors, and international experts over 100 people actively attended to the said workshop.

This event aims to provide the opportunity for discussion on digital economy and digital potential for contrition into the economic growth, and to ensure the overall citizen could be received the benefits through the development of digital system across the country.

During workshop, the participants discussed on various digital challenges in the country, including the low-speed internet, the unstable internet connection and the service fee. Significant proposals have been made to improve internet connectivity, particularly the session focused on the improvement of regulations related to digital payment, electronic signature, data security and consumer protection in order to build the confidence as to online transaction.

“Digital technology is a key factor in respect of socio-economic development, it creates new potentials and opportunities for many countries around the world as well as Lao PDR. Currently, there are many challenges for us to fully take advantage of our digital technologies as the result of the unstable internet connection and the unaffordable price for Internet service”, said by Mr. Kikeo Chanthaburi, Deputy Minister of Planning and Investment

“We need to pay attention on creating and enhancing the favorable environment and regulations to ensure the whole citizen, both public and private sector, could be benefited from using this technology”, he said.
